Making Real‑World Helicopter Training Accessible

Helicopter training is expensive, logistically complex, and constrained by airspace, weather, and instructor availability. For many enthusiasts, flying a helicopter is a lifelong dream that never quite materializes.

The Flight Sight product vision emerged from a simple question:
How can we give people the feeling and discipline of real helicopter training, without the costs and risks of actual flight time?

Product Overview

Flight Sight positions itself as a training and simulation platform for helicopter pilots and enthusiasts, built for Apple Vision.

At a high level, the app offers:

  • A full‑featured training stack: from startup procedures to flight maneuvers.

  • 180° Apple Immersive video paired with interactive 3D helicopter models.

  • A learning experience explicitly designed for student pilots and enthusiasts as a “next‑generation training aid.”

Experience Design: From Living Room to Hangar to Cockpit

The core design challenge was to make complex aviation content approachable in a living‑room setting, without losing the rigor expected by pilots.

Full‑scale 3D helicopter model is placed directly inside a modern living room. Users can walk around the aircraft in an immersive AR environment, inspecting rotor, tail, and cockpit as they would in a real hangar.

Technical Highlights

Flight Sight is built specifically for Apple’s spatial computing stack and leverages several key technologies.

High‑Resolution 3D Models 

  • 3D helicopters are built from scratch, with accurate interiors and exteriors.

  • Models are optimized for Immersive AR environments, maintaining fidelity at close inspection while still performing well on Vision hardware.

  • Attention to cockpit layout, instrumentation, and materials is critical to preserving training value.

Apple Immersive Video & 180° Capture 

The app uses Apple Immersive 3D 180º training videos:

  • Users occupy a virtual cockpit seat while real‑world flights play out around them.

  • Content includes specific flight maneuvers and conditions, making it suitable as a maneuver‑by‑maneuver training companion.

  • Videos are shot to maximize cockpit visibility and situational awareness, not just “cinematic” vistas.

SharePlay and Multi‑User Learning 

Flight Sight integrates SharePlay, with a custom seating template for cockpit views:

  • Instructors and students—or groups of enthusiasts—can share the same helicopter experience over FaceTime or Messages.

  • This opens the door to remote, synchronous training sessions and debriefs.
